Problem
'Sites' is a foundational construct which users are required to create as a first step upon signing up on the platform, primarily to house and organize devices. It also allows users to set user and group permissions and configure bulk actions for devices. As more product lines were added each year, the sites page became unsupportive of much needed features, and it was ignored by builders in-house and the customers alike. The page engagement rate was 7% and Org Admins complained of it not being useful at all and missing crucial functionality.

Old sites page

UX Issues with the old 'Sites' page
Table UI Framework:
High cognitive load to ingest data on what type of devices are in a site.
Not scalable to include all products in a site– Missing Guest, Mailroom, Intercom.
Features/ Functionality:
Site actions, site permissions and user roles are not discoverable.
Static and unusable page– No links to see details or manage devices and user profiles.
Cannot search for a site by device type or permissions.

Project Goal:
Design a (cross-product) sites page that is highly functional and usable. It must give users a quick overview of a site (sub-sites, devices & users), view relevant details for a chosen site, and take quick actions.

Understanding elements and technical characteristics of Sites
List of all Features and Flows
Prototypes of UI frameworks to evaluate trade-offs

Visual design exploration: Split panel view
Primary Information: Left Panel
Tree navigation of nested list of sites and subsites
Aggregate data– No. of devices, users, groups
Is it configured as an Alarm/ Guest/ Mailroom site

Secondary Summary Information: Right Panel
Device type + detail breakdown of device count for each
Details for Alarm, Guest and Mailroom sites
Breakdown of site permissions by roles

🦾 This project was designed and built collaboratively by the team in 1 quarter (3 months). Page engagement (more than 10 secs on page per session) rose by 47%, and did page views rose by about 30% in the first month. Customers also shared positive feedback about its usefulness.
